Goodr Grocery Store is coming to Birmingham. (Goodr)

Alabama’s first Goodr grocery store is opening this weekend in the Birmingham metro area.

Goodr and the Daniel Payne Legacy Village Foundation are launching the new store with a Grand Opening on Saturday, April 27, 11:00AM at 1500 Daniel Payne Plaza, Birmingham.

About Goodr grocery stores

Who is Goodr?

Goodr is a sustainable food waste management and hunger relief company founded on the principle that “hunger is not an issue of scarcity; it’s a matter of logistics.”

The new store expands the Daniel Payne Legacy Village Foundation’s existing food bank program known as Daniel’s Pantry. Through the Goodr Grocery Store partnership, the Foundation expects to provide 50,000 meals by the end of 2024.

Headquartered in Atlanta, as of 2024, Goodr has served nearly 32 million meals to those in need and redirected over 28 million pounds of food and organic material away from landfills.

This is a big deal in Birmingham because our community has a food insecurity rate of 21.3%, ranking it 12th highest among the 100 largest Metropolitan Statistical Areas in the country, according to the Alabama Poverty Project.

Support from Jefferson County was vital

This program was made possible through the support of Jefferson County.

“As the Jefferson County Commissioner for District 1, I could not be more pleased that the Commission ‘unanimously’ voted to support a project, representing the first model of this nature in Jefferson County.

Citizens deserve the very best the county has to offer, and our neighborhoods are made better for it.”

Jefferson County Commissioner Lashunda Scales

The community can attend the grand opening and tour the new store on Saturday, April 27. Along with Commissioner Scales, speakers at the ribbon cutting include:

  • Bishop Harry L. Seawright, Presiding Prelate of the AME Church Ninth Episcopal District
  • Brandon Cleveland, Daniel Payne Legacy Village Foundation
  • Jasmine Crowe-Houston, Founder & CEO, Goodr
  • Kristen Ward, Partnerships Manager, Goodr
  • Representative from the City of Birmingham

Goodr Grocery Store impact—50,000 meals

“It never gets old to me to open a new Goodr Grocery Store, knowing the kind of impact it will have on that community.

We are so excited to be able to serve Birmingham residents alongside the Daniel Payne Legacy Village Foundation and look forward to ensuring they reach their 50K meal goal.”

Jasmine Crowe-Houston, Goodr’s Founder and CEO
