Reading time: 2 minutes
The U.S. National Weather Service Birmingham Office has announced that severe storms are possible across Central Alabama on Tuesday, April 2.
April showers in Birmingham
Although Spring weather in Alabama has been mostly sunny and temperate so far, April is still peak tornado season. As long-time residents will remember, two of the most destructive tornado outbreaks in Alabama history occurred in April—April 3, 1974 and April 27, 2011.
According to a report posted by the NWS, Central Alabama residents could experience:
- Damaging winds
- A few tornadoes
- Large hail
Residents in the Birmingham area will begin to see storms from around 4PM Tuesday to 2AM Wednesday.
Ways to prepare for severe weather
Get prepared for tomorrow’s severe weather with these tips:
- Start Charging Electronics: Remember to start charging your electronics—phones, laptops, radios etc.—so you can watch the weather even if the power goes out.
- Create a Plan: Have a family plan that includes an emergency meeting place and related information. If you live in a mobile home or home without a basement, identify a nearby safe building you can get to quickly, such as a church or family member.
- Shelter at Home: Bring your family and pets inside, lock doors and close windows and vents. Go into an interior room with few windows if possible.
