Just across the street from the Alys Stephens Center, you’ll find UAB’s Abroms-Engel Institute for the Visual Arts (AEIVA), designed by the legendary architect Randall Stout. Over the past 10 years, UAB students and Birmingham locals have gotten to admire awesome art in over 90 exhibitions. To celebrate AEIVA’s 10th anniversary this year, read on to find out which exhibitions are happening now.

1. Warhol Revisited—open now-March 16 at AEIVA

AEIVA’s 10th anniversary celebration kicks off with the return of one of its first major exhibitions, the popular Warhol Fabricated. Now titled Warhol Revisited, the exhibition features original work by leading artist of the pop art movement, Andy Warhol, sourced from AEIVA’s collection, loans from The Andy Warhol Museum and local collectors.

The exhibition features a dynamic selection of works by Brooklyn artist Charles Lutz including his Denied series. His pieces explore the complications related to production, appropriation, authenticity and market value associated with Warhol’s work.

2. Amanda Ross-Ho: Untitled Inventory (Catalogue Irraisonné)—open now-March 16 at AEIVA

Amanda Ross-Ho dug through her archive to create something completely new for her exhibition at AEIVA, drawing inspiration from the idea of form being impacted by time.

Her exhibition consists of pieces she completed from 1999 to the present.

For Untitled Inventory (CATALOGUE IRRAISONNÉ), each sculpture in the exhibition replicates real-world objects that represent significant emotional, historical and meaningful moments throughout her life.

“Many of the works in the show are pieces that were selected from different time periods, but specifically have relationships with one another in the space and draw connection points and narratives between motifs that I repeat.

I am interested in playing with what happens when objects from different periods of time are brought together and form new relationships.”

3. 48th Annual Juried Student Exhibition—open now-March 15 at AEIVA

Now through March 15, AEIVA is hosting its 48th Annual Juried Student Exhibition. A wide selection of colorful and technical works by UAB students were selected by AEIVA featured artist Amanda Ross-Ho for an exhibition that will surprise and delight.

“Many of the artworks featured in the exhibition are the debut pieces of freshman and sophomore artists, marking their first-ever inclusion in a gallery setting. It can be a life-changing experience for someone who wants to be an artist.”
