Save the date—The Alabama State Games are returning to Birmingham for their 41st annual event, June 7-9. Keep reading to hear from 2023 Adult Male Athlete of the Year, Carlos Matthews, on what makes the games so exciting, why you should participate and more.

The Alabama State Games will bring athletes from all over the state to the Birmingham area for an Olympic-style weekend.

The games showcase the traditions and ceremonies of the Olympic Games we all know and love while offering a unique opportunity for athletes to compete in a supportive, community-oriented environment. Athletes of all ages and abilities are welcome to participate.

Meet Carlos Matthews, 2023 Adult Male Athlete of the Year

1 1 The Alabama State Games are returning to Birmingham with new sports, June 7-9

Carlos Matthews graduated from Huntsville High School, where he was a track and field athlete as well as a school record holder for over 25 years.

From 1996 to 2018, Carlos shone as a track and field coach for men’s and women’s teams across the state.

He has competed in the Alabama State Games as a track and field athlete since 1985. According to Matthews, these games are not only about fostering young talent, but nurturing a lifelong love for athletics within the Alabama community.

“If you’re considering participating in the Alabama State Games, I would encourage you to take the leap. Whether you’re a seasoned athlete or someone looking to try something new, the games provide a platform to challenge yourself and grow.

You’ll become part of a larger community that values health, fitness and sportsmanship. It’s a chance to make lasting memories and potentially ignite or rekindle a lifelong passion for sports.”

This year’s games will feature exciting new sports, including:

  • 7-on-7 football
  • E-sports
  • Power lifting
  • Softball

Other sports include:

  • Baseball
  • Baton twirling
  • Disc golf
  • Tennis
  • Swimming
  • See all 24 sports that are offered to find one you’d like to register for. Mark your calendar, registration opens March 1!

Did you know? Thousands of dollars in scholarships are given away at the games each year. The event is a huge win for the state when it comes to promoting higher education.

The games have awarded an average of $14,000 every year in academic scholarships (a total of $363,000) to Alabama State Games athletes. Last year, the games awarded $20,000 in scholarships.
