Do you have paint, glues, bags of unused yard chemicals or cans of vehicle fluids sitting around in your garage? Now is the time to get rid of them responsibly at Jefferson County’s Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day. The County is providing this event due to the overwhelming response at the Spring Household Hazardous Waste Day held earlier this year in April.

Jefferson County is working to accommodate all types of hazardous waste with the slogan: don’t flush it, don’t stuff it, don’t dump it, to help people do the right thing. When hazardous waste is disposed of improperly chemicals can contaminate soil and water. 5 of the most common items you can bring to dispose.

1. Paint + related items

Jefferson County’s Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day is a great place to drop off latex, oils, gallons and half-gallons of paint. A typical bucket of paint contains chemicals that can be dangerous if not disposed of properly.

2. Televisions + electronics

Another group of commonly disposed of items is electronics. Electronic recycling vendors on site will shred all data containing devices large to small from smartphones, telephones, smartwatches and televisions. More items people drop off include security equipment, cameras and SD cards. Many electronic devices contain tubes with mercury and lead that can be dangerous for the environment.

3. Pesticides + other yard care chemicals

Jefferson County’s Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day allows for people to drop off pesticides including roach and ant spray, weed killer, house and lawn yard chemicals and rat trap bait. All forms of pesticides can be dropped off ranging from liquids, fumigants and solids.

4. Tires + appliances

County residents also commonly dispose of tires and appliances. Anything from refrigerators to extra wheels for wagons, lawn mowers and tractors is welcome to be brought in.

The County commonly has people bring paper that needs to be discarded and provides on-site shredding. Batteries are another item commonly disposed of—from key-fob batteries to hearing aid batteries and high voltage batteries for boats and golf carts.

Unique items that have been disposed of at household hazardous waste day

No matter what items you have to dispose of, Jefferson County would like you to bring them in so they can help ensure the hazardous items don’t end up on the side of the road or a landfill. The County has seen it all—from an octopus in formaldehyde, TNT from the 40s, original 1970’s arcade machines, mercury and banned pesticides.

There is no cost to attend Jefferson County’s annual Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day, but you will have to show proof of residency for Jefferson County with a driver’s license or car tag. The County asks that you group your items together and leave them in the trunk or on a utility trailer.
