The best things we ate at Birmingham restaurants this September
September was a great month for food on the Bham Now team (but what month isn’t?). We tried everything from elegant sushi and risotto to delicious food truck creations. Let’s dig in.
1. Scallop Risotto from Bocca Ristorante
“Everything at Bocca is fresh and made from scratch and in-house—the pastas and the sauces. The Scallop Risotto is a work of art—not just in its presentation but as an unforgettable meal with friends and family.”

2. Veggie Plate from Juniper
“On top of the great vibes and stunning aesthetics of Juniper, their menu is to die for. The veggie plate is one of my favorite dishes I have ever ordered at a restaurant. The flavors and creativity of this dish are my absolute fave!”

3. Red Spider Roll from Jinsei
“The Red Spider Roll from Jinsei was some of the best sushi I’ve ever had. The combination of flavors—tobiko, avocado and eel sauce—were complimented by the freshness of the cucumber and the heartiness of tempura soft-shell crab.”

4. Steak Tacos from Dos Hermanos Taco Truck
“I absolutely loved Dos Hermanos Tacos! It was my first time trying their delicious tacos at the taco truck, and it truly didn’t disappoint. Every bite was a burst of flavor, and I can’t wait to go back for more.”
David Matthews, Junior Account Executive
5. Combination Platter from Ahki’s
“Ahki’s has been one of my go-to’s every since it opened. The flavors are always top-notch, and they load it up with plenty of meat. The signature sauce that they drizzle over everything takes it over the top.”

“The Modelo Jerk Chicken Sandwich had so many savory flavors and the fried pickles on the sandwich made it unforgettable! I am still trying to see when I can go back.”
Sadie Sue Long, content producer intern
7. Gnocci Mac n’ Cheese from Freddy’s
“This was some of the best mac and cheese I have ever had, actually. It was so cheesy and the gnocchi was perfect. One hundred percent would eat again.”

8. Baba Ghannooj + Veggie Grape Leaves from Makarios
“I’m a baba ghannooj enthusiast, and this was some of the best I ‘ve ever had. It was rivaled by the veggie grape leaves that came after though. They were incredibly flavorful , with loads of spices and a fall-apart-in-your-mouth texture.”
