Edgehill at Southtown is located on the grounds of Southtown Court, a 455-unit public housing community dating back to 1941. The Housing Authority of the Birmingham District approved the demolition and redevelopment of the site in 2019.

“The original buildings were constructed in 1941 and they’ve been in use for a long time. Plus, the apartment units inside these original buildings are a lot smaller and compressed compared to modern apartments. The Housing Authority of the Birmingham District is really excited to finally be able to provide the housing that our residents have deserved for a long time.”

The demolition of Southtown Court began in late 2021, followed by the cleaning and preparation of the site for redevelopment. On April 14th of this year, the Housing Authority of the Birmingham District (HABD) and their development partner Southside Development Company (SDC) broke ground on the new development.

The development of Edgehill at Southtown is taking place in multiple phases, beginning with the construction of a family residential building bordering 23rd Street South. The building will be home to a mix of 60 apartment units and a number of amenities, including:

  • A playground
  • A fitness center
  • A computer room
  • And much more!

Currently, construction crews are working on framing the second story of the family residential building. Next they’ll construct the third and fourth floors before installing the roof. Once the roof is up, crews will install HVAC, plumbing and electrical before sealing walls inside the units. Afterwards, they can begin to bring in appliances and put finishing touches on the units.

“Construction is progressing ahead of schedule, so we’re pretty happy about that! We’re on track to have this family building completed next year, and we’re hoping to get started on the senior-living building sometime in October.”
