The need for blood donations

According to the American Red Cross, someone in the U.S. needs blood every two seconds. There are many reasons a patient might need blood, including:

  • Victim of an accident or a burn
  • Heart surgery
  • Organ transplants
  • Battling cancer

Since there is no substitute for blood, the lives of these patients are reliant on generous blood donors around the country. However, blood donations tend to decline during the summer while volunteers are out on vacation, watching kids on summer break or stuck inside due to the stifling summer heat.

To help alleviate the strain on blood supplies, members of Bham Now, the Birmingham Barons and countless locals turned out to the American Red Cross’ Home Run Hero blood drive at Regions Field last year. Thanks to the efforts of volunteers and donors, the American Red Cross was able to collect 92 units of blood—enough to save the lives of 190 people.
