Matthew McConaughey spottings in Birmingham as he films “The Rivals of Amizah King”

He’s here, he’s there, he’s everywhere!

Jefferson County residents reported spotting famed actor McConaughey in Bessemer, Mountain Brook, Pell City and, most recently, at the downtown Birmingham restaurant Frothy Monkey.

McConaughey is staying in The Magic City to film his newest movie The Rivals of Amizah King, a crime thriller.

Bringing the big screen to Birmingham

In May the film opened casting auditions in Birmingham, and locals had the opportunity to appear alongside McConaughey.

His presence in the city is all the buzz in Birmingham. Rumors circulated in May that McConaughey’s family was renting a home in Mountain Brook, which Mayor Stewart Welch verified.

“We’re of course delighted to have him here,” said Mayor Welch. “I think Mountain Brook is a very welcoming city. It’s a very unusual city. It’s got the three villages- all very unique. And, you know, it’s got great homes. He’s staying in one great home. We’re just delighted to have him and his family here,” concluded Welch.
