Earlier today, the Birmingham City Council voted to amend the Birmingham zoning district map in favor of George’s, a proposed new restaurant at 2614 Highland Avenue in Highland Park. A full-service restaurant offering steaks, martinis and more, George’s is the latest project from local developer and professional photographer Miller Mobley.

Mobley previously opened Slim’s Pizzeria in Crestline in 2021.

According to Mobley, George’s is meant to emulate the old-school “city taverns” of Boston, New York and Chicago where guests could grab a martini, a steak and enjoy a night of theatre.

“We’re not trying to re-invent food here, we’re wanting to do something classic; Oysters Rockefeller, steaks, great fish, that kind of fare.”

The restaurant would be open seven nights a week from 5PM to 10PM, with an estimated 25 employees serving up to 100 guests. To help alleviate parking concerns, the team behind George’s plans to valet vehicles to a nearby park lot owned by a developing partner.

Mobley chose Highland Park due to the neighborhood’s historic charm.

“To me, atmosphere and placemaking is just as important as the restaurant itself. You have to put it in a neighborhood that has a fabric that adds to the overall environment. Highland Park is one of the gem neighborhoods of Birmingham and has the historic beauty that some of these new neighborhoods lack. The neighborhood and the building were speaking to me. [2614 Highland Avenue] has been a desolate building for the past decade, so we’re coming there to restore it and add some vibrancy to the neighborhood.”
