Michael Jordan Grant Program supports Birmingham education
Reading time: 3 minutes
As a basketball legend and former player for the Birmingham Barons, Michael Jordan is not only one of the greatest basketball players in history, but he is also leaving a legacy off the court.
Part of his efforts include the Black Community Commitment, which was established in 2020 as an initiative of Jordan’s Community Grant Program. The Birmingham Education Foundation has been selected for a one-year sizable grant from this program.
Birmingham Education Foundation
According to the Birmingham Business Journal, $2.3 million in grant funds were awarded to 48 organizations nationwide in honor of Jordan’s 60th birthday. One of the fortunate recipients was The Birmingham Education Foundation. Jordan’s grant program supports the foundation’s mission, which is to connect students to resources and create an environment that allows students to reach their full potential.
The Birmingham Education Foundation could not disclose the amount of the grant but will use the funding to increase the number of students in the Birmingham City Schools served by its programs. Efforts will additionally be made to further invest in the Education Innovation Initiative, which is designed to support students and families in Birmingham City Schools.
The executive director of the Birmingham Education Foundation spoke to Birmingham Business Journal about their initiatives moving forward with this grant.
“Our strategy is simple: Start where there is a need. And when you get there, take the time to understand the need and introduce solutions to address it.”
Ashley Samuels, Executive Director, Birmingham Education Foundation
