Since 1921—that’s 102 years!—Norton’s has brightened The Magic City with lovely bouquets, plants and gift baskets. Founded by J. S. Norton, the business remained family-owned and operated for three generations before being passed on to the Pappas family, who are now in their second generation of ownership.

Though it began as a small floral business, it’s continued to evolve through innovation and creativity. The excellent customer service and loyal support from the Birmingham community have also helped Norton’s blossom.

2. The flowers are GORGEOUS

If you’re tired of the generic, browning flowers offered at many grocery stores and even some plant nurseries, you’ll want to start paying close attention now. Here are some must-knows about Norton’s beautiful flowers and why they stand above your everyday ready-made bouquets.

Every flower arrangement at Norton’s is designed by a talented team of florists. There are currently seven designers on staff with 125 years of experience combined. No wonder every arrangement is breathtaking!

Here are more reasons Norton’s stands out in the floral business:

  • Most of its flowers come from South America, specifically Colombia and Ecuador. (About 80% of flowers sold in the US come from South America.)
  • During summer months, the shop loves to support domestic growers, purchasing flowers from a variety in Alabama and Mississippi. One of Norton’s delivery drivers even grows flowers in Trafford, Alabama, which are sold at the store.

Wondering what’s Birmingham’s most popular flower? Red roses! (And not just on Valentine’s Day.)

“Year-round, red roses are the universal sign of love. We sell over 1,000 each week throughout the year.”

Think you can’t afford flowers? Sure you can! Norton’s offers a variety of price points to fit all sorts of budgets. From flowers sold by the stem to grab-and-go date night surprises and even wedding florals, you’ll find something spectacular and affordable.

3. The owners + staff love to give back

The Magic City is a wonderful place because many local businesses and individuals take time to give back to the community. Norton’s is one local biz that loves doing just that.

Every October, Norton’s participates in the nationwide event, Petal-It-Forward. It’s based on the scientifically-proven premise that science has proven more people receive joy from GIVING flowers than from receiving them. On one special day, Norton’s chooses a random street corner in the Greater Birmingham Area and hands out 400 bouquets to those who pass by. Each person receives two bouquets—one to keep and one to “petal forward” to someone else.

The giving doesn’t stop there, here are more ways Norton’s helps the community:

  • Every Veteran’s Day, Norton’s gives a single rose bud vase to all veterans at Birmingham’s Veteran’s Hospital.
  • Through monetary and flower donations, Norton’s helps The Church at Southside which strives to assist Birmingham’s homeless community. The church even holds water baptisms in Norton’s parking lot for new believers in their community—typically 75-100 individuals every Sunday.

4. It has an alcohol delivery service

If you think your local florist only sells flowers, you’re in for a delightful surprise. Get ready to say cheers because Norton’s Florist also sells alcohol—and it can even be delivered!

The shop launched its alcohol delivery service this past October and locals across the Greater Birmingham Area are loving it. Norton’s offers a tasty and ever-growing selection of wine and beer, which can be purchased solo or paired with flowers or a delicious snack from Alabama Peanut Company, another local, family-owned and century-old business.

“We made the decision to sell alcohol to continue to be innovative in our offerings. Many of the large florists that we are friends with around the country have had success in selling beer and wine with flowers, so we decided to do the same to keep our product offerings as fresh as possible.”
