The World Games 2022 are coming up fast and it’s safe to say the excitement is building. Someone who’s been anticipating the event for a long time is Craig Legg, who crafted a unique art exhibit using found objects showcasing the variety of sporting events at TWG 2022. Read on for a closer look.

At local gallery and art collective East Village Arts of Birmingham (EVA) lies an expansive display of art pieces inspired by The World Games 2022. The man who put it all together? Craig Legg, a creative visual artist who took his interest in the upcoming event to new heights.

Back in September 2021, we stopped by EVA to chat with Craig and take a look at the marvelous art on display. Soon, his art will be on display at The World Games 2022 Plaza Merchant’s Market.

“The show is meant to be informational and educational. It’s meant to educate people about what they can expect from The World Games 2022. I didn’t know anything when I started, but I did 35 or so small paintings of each sporting event featured. Some of the events break down into more categories, like gymnastics with four or five subcategories.”

From the sporting events to the venues, Craig covered all things TWG 2022 in his eccentric gallery. The main iteration of the show breaks down each sporting event into small paintings.

One of the most unique parts of this gallery is the objects included in some of the pieces. From nuts and bolts to pieces of ice skates, if you look closely at Craig’s art, you’ll notice a few familiar household objects that have been turned into art.

In the past, Craig said he’d worked with lots of found objects, so that’s a personal thing he wanted to include in the gallery. So what inspired him to make art about The World Games 2022 in the first place?

“I actually grew up a big sports fan, and I’m basically from here in Birmingham. A lot of artistic people aren’t into sports, but in recent years that gap is closing. This is a world-class event coming to Birmingham, and we don’t get many of those. It’s a great opportunity that people should be excited about.”
