Wondering who has the best margarita in the state? We’re proud to claim this Birmingham spot, Mayawell, as the best, according to Eat This, Not That!—a national foodie publication. Whether you choose sugar or salt this Cinco De Mayo, we’re sharing why these margs made the top of the list.

A sweet honor

After canvassing the entire country and speaking to locals in every state, the team at Eat This, Not That! ultimately selected Mayawell Bar is the best margarita in the state.

In case you’re not familiar with Mayawell Bar in Pepper Place, this local spot is an authentic agave and tequila bar with a wide selection of tequilas and mezcal plus a drink menu that is sure to have something for everyone in your party.

According to their website, owner and operator, Neill Crook, traveled to Mexico and fell in love with everything about the culture—including the drinks. He strived to bring a little piece of that magic back with him to The Magic City where he created Mayawell Bar in 2019.

The name has its own special story: a creative twist on the phonetic spelling of “Mayahuel”, the ancient Aztec goddess of the agave plant. Since tequila and mezcal are made from the agave plant, it seemed fitting.

If you need a little inspiration on what to order first, you know we’re always full of recommendations. A few of the Bham Now team recs include:

  • The Strawberry Margarita: Blanco tequila, lime, fresh strawberries, simple syrup & a salted rim
  • Bonfire Margarita: Mezcal, lime, Ancho Reyes chili liqueur, simple syrup & a smoky salted rim
  • We’ll Never Be Royals: Mezcal, pineapple, hibiscus syrup, muddled jalapeno & lime

Hibiscus syrup + muddled jalapeno? C’mon—what’s not to love?

More margaritas, please! 💃
