NEW: Medical Properties Trust to build new world-class headquarters in Liberty Park
According to their 2022 corporate responsibilities report, Medical Properties Trust (MPT) is developing a new world-class headquarters in Liberty Park later this year. Keep reading for all the details.
A new addition to Liberty Park
After acquiring more than 50 acres of undeveloped land in the Liberty Park neighborhood in 2021, Medical Properties Trust officially has plans to utilize the property.
“With the same responsibility we feel towards all the patients who are treated in our hospitals each year, we have embarked on the development of a brand new, world-class headquarters that will focus on opportunities for healing, recovery and growth.”

The location itself has some pretty neat history. The Birmingham Business Journal reported that the land had been used as a coal mine by Alabama Fuel and Iron Company and Snider Coal Company until 1945. When operations shut down that year, the land began to heal, creating a beautiful forest and green space.
The Medical Properties Trust team said it’s the perfect location for their team to continue to support each other, their tenants and communities.
Petal Certified
If you haven’t heard of a Living Building before, they’re really fascinating. Living Buildings are self-sufficient, produces more energy than it uses and collects and treats all water on site. Each Living Building is a regenerative space that connects occupants to light, air, food, nature and community.
MPT teamed up with an internationally renowned architectural firm to design the world-class facility, slated to be among the few in the world that receive the Living Building Petal Certification.
The facility is designed to be net positive for energy and water with zero carbon emissions. Through this design, the MPT team will be inspired to use water, energy and materials from the building responsibly.
Additionally, the plan is for the building to receive the Platinum WELL Certification, which recognizes spaces that advance human health and well-being.
What to expect
According to the design plans, offices in the building will be open to the woods sloping down through the hillside with an atrium pointing to the sky.
The development will only impact 30% of the existing land. Plus, 50,000 sq. ft. of solar technology and at least 10 electric vehicle stations will be on site.
Construction for the exciting environmentally-friendly headquarters will begin in late 2022 with an opening planned in 2024.
