The Tutor, a mystery thriller starring Garrett Hedlund, Noah Schnapp, Victoria Justice, Jonny Weston and Ekaterina Baker has been filming in and around Birmingham this month.

The film  is directed by Jordan Ross and written by Ryan King.

According to Film Birmingham’s Jessica Moody,  production began on March 27th and will last till April 22nd. They have filmed on location throughout the Magic City and the metro area — including downtown Birmingham near the Lyric Theater, Bessemer’s Historic Moody Mansion and at a lake outside the city.

The Tutor Storyline

What is the movie about?

The Hollywood news website Deadline revealed earlier this week the storyline for The Tutor:

“The film follows a professional tutor (Hedlund) who, after being given an unexpected assignment at a remote manor, finds himself battling his disturbed student’s (Schnapp) obsessions that threaten to expose his darkest secrets and unravel a carefully crafted persona.”

Films in Birmingham Making a Comeback

Before the pandemic struck in Spring of 2020, Birmingham was fast becoming a popular destination for Hollywood.  Remember the 2019 movie Line of Duty, starring Aaron Eckhart where they shot the scene of a car flipping in the middle of downtown? Watch it — HERE

After a difficult two years, inquiries about shooting movies in The Magic City are rolling in.

“We are seeing things come back,” Moody told us. “We get a lot of inquiries. Birmingham and the state of Alabama in general have really great incentives, which is why people love to film here.”

Good for the Economy

The film industry is a shot in the arm for the local economy.  Even a small budget film like The Tutor employs local people and uses local hotels and caterers.

Moody expects several films to be shot on location in and around Birmingham this fall.
