Meet the recipients of the 2022 EBSCO Community Impact grants

The EBSCO Community Impact Program (ECI) is dedicated to helping local nonprofit organizations through donations and volunteer service. This year’s program focuses on organizations that target social and racial inequity through their work. Learn more about this year’s recipients who are making an impact on the community below.
1. Albert Schweitzer Fellowship of Alabama
The Albert Schweitzer Fellowship competitively chooses fellows from graduate and professional programs across the state to build a pipeline of emerging professionals who will serve and empower vulnerable people to live healthier lives and create healthier communities.

2. Banks Academy
Banks Academy is a private Christian high school that serves students and families in the East Lake community and provides students with the tools they need for a bright future.

3. Better Basics
Better Basics helps children in Birmingham schools learn how to read and write with confidence through literacy intervention programs. Last year they gave away almost 32,000 books to local communities.

4. Breakthrough Birmingham
Breakthrough Birmingham strives to reverse educational inequity by providing free, year-round, high-quality, multi-year programs for traditionally underrepresented middle and high school students.

5. Childcare Resources
Childcare Resources works to ensure quality care and education of children in the Birmingham community through financial aid, education, and assistance to families, providers of childcare, and the community.

6. College Choice Foundation (CCF)
CCF provides support to 30-50 motivated, high-achieving students in the Birmingham area each year through individual mentoring, standardized test prep, essay writing instruction, financial aid guidance and more so they can gain entrance into and attend college.

7. Coosa Riverkeeper
Coosa Riverkeeper’s mission is to protect, promote, and restore the Coosa River. Their organization has developed four core programs that engage the many people who live, work, visit, and recreate on the Coosa River, tributaries, and lakes.

8. Gasp
GASP works to reduce pollution, advance climate action and secure environmental justice in the Greater Birmingham area through education, advocacy and collaboration.

9. Girls Inc of Central Alabama
Girls Inc. delivers life-changing programs and experiences that equip girls to overcome serious barriers to grow up strong, smart, and bold.

10. Grace Klein Community, Inc
Grace Klein Community seeks to unite diverse individuals, businesses, ministries, and churches by sharing what they have in order to meet physical and spiritual needs both locally and globally.

11. Holy Family Cristo Rey High School
Holy Family Cristo Rey High School combines academic rigor and a corporate work-study program to empower students from economically challenged communities to graduate high school ready to persist in college and flourish in life.

12. Magic City Harvest
Magic City Harvest works to alleviate food insecurity, malnutrition, and food waste through the free distribution of donated excess food to programs feeding those in need. They’re the only perishable food recovery program in Birmingham.

13. My Sister’s Place, Inc
My Sister’s Place helps rescue women in dangerous situations and provides them with shelter, community, guidance and love to heal and eventually return them to a safe environment.

14. Second Shift
Second Shift assists youth that are at-risk and aging out of the foster care system by providing basic care, connection programs and transitional housing assistance. Check out their “Go over the edge” event coming this summer.

15. Space One Eleven
Space One Eleven provides professional opportunities for artists, creates a forum for public understanding of contemporary art, and offers arts education to Birmingham youth.

16. Spring Valley School
Spring Valley School is an independent, co-educational, college preparatory school whose mission is to provide excellence in education for bright students with learning differences.

17. Vidal Access
Vidal Access helps the community by providing low-income students with high-level college counseling services within their own high school and remotely.

These nonprofits have done an outstanding job providing for the community and will continue to excel with these generous grants from EBSCO. Members of the EBSCO team will not only help fund their efforts, but partner with these organizations through future service projects and volunteer opportunities.
