71 ways to celebrate Black History Month from the Birmingham Public Library

Looking for more ways to celebrate Black History Month? Well, The Birmingham Public Library (BPL) has 71 upcoming events for you to celebrate Black History Month in The Magic City. Here are eight unique events to kick off the programs. Keep reading for more details on what the BPL has in store.
Presenting Black Wellness + Celebration
For Black History Month 2022, the Birmingham Public Library’s theme is Black Wellness. All month long, they will have a total of 71 programs running at different branches for you to celebrate. The Titusville Library will use Design Space Cricut Software and a heated transfer vinyl to create a beautiful heat press design. Just bring a solid color shirt and they will prove the rest.

I feel like it is imprtant for us to have events like this at our libraries. Events where we can come together and learn more about our history. Our libraries are like a sanctuary for people. Libraries are not for just checking out books, they’re also for connectivity and a safe haven. They are still vital as centerpiece in our community.

2. Famous Alabamian Scavenger Hunt
All month long, your challenge is to find the photos of all 10 famous African Americans hidden throughout the library and match the icons with the proper description of them.

3. Make and Take Kits: Achi Game Board
Celebrate Black History Month with a game of Achi from Ghana. This game is similar to tic-tac-toe and the participants will make a felt game board for Achi. Kits and instructions will be available while supplies last.

4. 3D Jewelry Printing
Use the 3D printers to create jewelry inspired by Black Panther.

5. T.K. Thorne: Behind the Magic Curtain
Join author T.K. Thorne as she discusses her new book Behind the Magic Curtain: Secrets, Spies, and Unsung White Allies of Birmingham’s Civil Rights Days. A novel that looks back into history and tells the little-known and untold stories of an intriguing cast.

6. Black History Month Trivia Game @ your Library
Children can join the fun for Black History Month Trivia. Test your knowledge about the historical facts and contributions of African Americans.

7. The Power of Love: A Black History Discovery Program
As you celebrate the icons of Black History Month, learn about the love that these historical figures were able to achieve. The Five Points West Library will focus on the soft sides of black trailblazers, for people to learn more about their lives.

8. MLK Stained Glass Art
Learn how to create a stained glass piece of Martin Luther King Jr. All supplies will be provided.
