The University of Montevallo (UM) is ringing in the new year by celebrating their noteworthy accomplishment of ranking as one of the best online college programs in the nation.

The secret to success

The secret to their success? Flexibility and close connection, which are best executed at a smaller establishment. Though UM only has a few thousand undergraduate students, it puts them at an advantage for adapting to the modern COVID-19 world.

“We are delighted to once again be counted as one of the nation’s best online graduate education programs. UM has fostered a commitment to quality online education. We’ve always excelled in educator preparation, but in the last few years, we’ve focused on how to best translate that student experience to the online environment.”

-Dr. Jennifer Alexiou-Ray, UM College of Education and Human Development, Director of Graduate Studies

Requirements to make the list

The requirements to make U.S. News and World Report’s online college program list are split into five categories:

  • Engagement
  • Expert Opinion
  • Faculty Credentials and Training
  • Services and Technologies
  • Student Excellence

To succeed in each of these categories is a tremendous accomplishment and Alexiou-Ray has complete faith in the students.

“Candidates in our graduate programs are already stellar educators,” she said. “We’re working with the best. As they go through our programs and graduate, they’ve grown their practice theoretically and practically to have an even greater impact on students.”
