For most of us, our first relationship with money was a few coins clanking into a piggybank or the tooth fairy’s presents left under the pillow.

While those are still great ways to introduce your kids to the power of managing their money, it doesn’t hurt to get a little help from financial literacy experts—with some enticing incentives along the way.

See how one of the first credit unions in Alabama’s history—going strong throughout Birmingham and the state 90+ years later—has a few fun, easy ways to get your kids invested in financial literacy for a brighter future.

Why financial literacy matters from an early age

Just like many lessons kids need to learn, pairing teachings with fun activities and easy-to-understand terminology makes the job easier and more enjoyable.

Birmingham-based AlaTrust Credit Union has thought this through: Activity books speak to kids in familiar terms and show how savings can add up. Kids learn to take control of their finances, while AlaTrust makes sure parents feel confident and informed as well.

Here’s how AlaTrust is committed to financial literacy for its youngest members:

  • The Honey Huddle: We’ll go into more detail below, but this is a fun “club” that’s simple to join and comes with a lot of perks to enable kids to start building smarter money habits.
  • Real-world, hands-on experience: A free program recommended for grades 7-12, AlaTrust will come to your school and provide fun, app-based learning that shows kids how their spending can result in a path to financial literacy. Learn more + sign up here.
  • Parents + guardians retain a watchful eye: AlaTrust makes sure you play an active role in your kids’ Honey Huddle experience.

AlaTrust Credit Union’s Honey Huddle program is a natural way to intro your little ones to the power of smart money decisions. It has two ways kids can get real-world experience with their funds, including:

  • Savings: A parent, grandparent or legal guardian can give permission to enroll kids between 0-13 years old. It only takes $5 to join the credit union and open the account*.
  • Checking + rewards debit card: Available to kids aged 8-13, this is the next level of money education. Parents, grandparents and legal guardians can control the card from an app, transferring money to and from the account and turning spending on or off when needed*.

Beyond the savings and spending lessons, there are other perks to joining the Honey Huddle, including:

  • All “A”s paydays: Junior members can get up to $20/year deposited into their accounts for high-ranking report cards.
  • Collectible bee badges: Participation is incentivized by reaching certain milestones in the program, like making their first deposit.
  • Free swag: Members get a free t-shirt + activity book while supplies last.

In addition to building these smart money practices, you’re also teaching Birmingham kids about the importance of investing in their community. As a Birmingham-founded credit union, choosing AlaTrust means kids are learning to keep their investing local, which makes all of our futures brighter.
