As a public service, since 2018, Bham Now has reported monthly Jefferson County Department of Health restaurant scores. In October and November over 100 local establishments that handle and serve food were inspected by the health department. These places include: restaurants, schools, nursing homes, daycare centers, hospitals, grocery stores and concession stands.

Food service inspection scores are updated regularly on the Jefferson County Department of Health website. The database is easy to access and it goes back several years. We estimate approximately 10-15% of the restaurant inspections score 95 or above, while most local school cafeterias, for example, tend to score 95 or above.

Who made the local restaurant honor roll this month? Here are some notable local establishments:

Todd English P.U.B. – Public Urban Bar. – 97

It’s hard to believe Todd English P.U.B. opened in Uptown in February 2013. They were pioneers back then. It was worth the wait. Now, the popular eatery has Protective Stadium and a newly refurbished state of the art Legacy Arena as its neighbors.

Roadside Bar-B-Q in East Lake – 95

If you are ever traveling down 1st Avenue North through East Lake looking for lunch, stop by Roadside. Sometimes you just need to roll down the window and follow the smell of BBQ on the grill on the street corner.

A neighborhood favorite.

Black Market Bar and Grill – 280 Location –  99

Have you met Black Market’s “Evil Bartenders”? Here you go! A Birmingham original since 2009 — I highly recommend the burgers. And yes – they are one of a kind – like the Disgraceland burger (peanut butter and jelly) and the Godzilla Burger (a pound of meat and 2X bacon and cheese!).

Additional 95 and above scores:

La Tazza at the Sheraton – 97

Casey’s Bar and Grill – 98

Magic City Grill II in Fairfield – 96

Tasty Jamaica Wing in Fairfield – 96
