1. Explore the town of Fairhope
Fairhope is about as picturesque as it gets. Their cozy downtown area is studded with boutiques, art galleries, book stores and incredible restaurants to make for a perfect day of shopping and a delicious dinner out. Nestled on Mobile Bay, this adorable city is only an hour from Gulf Shores. But, with all the fun activities this place has to offer you’re better off skipping the beach and sticking around town.

2. Go out of this world in Huntsville
Just a two-hour drive away from Birmingham is the City of Huntsville, and if the Space and Rocket Center isn’t enough of an attraction to convince you to visit, the food, outdoor activities and shopping scene definitely will be.
If you want to get outdoors this Labor Day, head to Monte Sano State Park for some great hiking trails. 3. Golf along the Robert Trent Jones Trail
If golfing is your ideal weekend getaway, there’s no better travel spot for Labor Day than Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail. Tee up at the fifth longest golf course in the world and enjoy a course that is both challenging and beautiful. We recommend visiting the Ross Bridge course circling the resort for a wonderful vacation spot that won’t take you out of this popular city.

4. Head to the mountains of Mentone
Escape from city life to the serene mountains of Mentone for a weekend emersed in nature. Mentone boasts stunning mountain views right along Little River. Explore Desoto Falls and Little River Canyon National Preserve while you’re there for nice hiking trails and water activities in the summer.
On the drive home from Mentone, make sure to stop by Cherokee Rock Village for one of the best views in the state and some great rock climbing, too.

5. Camp out at Wind Creek State Park
If you’re looking for a camping adventure that is more family fun than roughing it in the wilderness, Wind Creek State Park is the perfect destination for you. With available activities including swimming, hiking, fishing, archery and putt-putt golf, you’ll have more than enough to fill your long weekend.
