Has a long winter left you feeling blah? This March, McWane Science Center is ready to put some pep in your step with exciting programs and activities like Spring Break Camp and Women in STEM. Scroll on for even more ways McWane will rock your spring.
1. Spring Break Camp is March 22-26—and you can still sign up
Spring Break is fast approaching. If you’re like me, you’re scrambling for ideas to keep your child entertained during their one glorious week of freedom from in-person and/or virtual school. Happily, McWane is here to save the day with Spring Break Camp.
Taking place Monday-Friday, March 22-26, kids ages 4-12 in pre-k to sixth grade will delve into the world of STEM (science, technology, engineering and math). Through hands-on, minds-on activities, campers will:
- Learn about oceans
- Journey into outer space
- Build robots
- Discover dinosaurs
- And more!
Important Camp Details
- Camp Dates: Monday-Friday, March 22-26
- Time: Pre-K-Kindergarten, Daily from 9AM-1:30PM | Grades 1-6, Daily from 9AM-4PM
- Before care and aftercare are available for no additional cost. Before care – 7:45-9AM | Aftercare, 4-5:30PM
- Price: Pre-K-Kindergarten, Members – $50/day, Non-Members – $60/day | Grades 1-6: Members – $70/day | Non-Members – $80/day | *Lunch included in price.

To keep campers safe and healthy:
- Campers and staff will be required to wear masks.
- The number of campers has been reduced.
- Social distancing and sanitization requirements will be strictly enforced.

If a camp is canceled by McWane Science Center, a full refund will be returned to the registrant. If a registrant cancels a camp, a 50% refund will be made if the registrant notifies the Camp program in writing, which is emailed, postmarked, or faxed no later than 10 working days prior to the camp.
2. Discover Women in STEM every weekend in March
There’s no question that women are amazing. One way they truly stand out is through their accompaniments in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM).
To honor the incredible achievements of women scientists, inventors and innovators, and to inspire the next generation of women in STEM, McWane is offering hands-on science programing and shows every weekend during the month of March.
What: Women in STEM
When: Every Saturday from 10AM-5PM + Every Sunday from Noon-5PM in March. Daily program times vary and will be listed on the program map/guide upon arrival.

3. Become a Teen Volunteer at McWane this summer
Hey teens! Summer is just around the corner. Instead of becoming Birmingham’s ultimate couch potato, put your free time to good use by becoming a teen volunteer at McWane.
Volunteers will help spark wonder and curiosity through science to guests of all ages and even gain real-life work experience through customer service, problem-solving, teamwork and more.
There are two teen volunteer programs:
- Teen Volunteer Program for students completing grades 8-12.
- Junior Teen Program for students completing grades 6-7.
To participate in McWane’s Summer Teen Volunteer Program:
- Fill out and submit this online application by Thursday, April 1. Be sure to include all requested documents including resume and two letters of recommendation.
- Go on an interview and show ‘em what you’re made of.
- If selected, attend an orientation and training sessions.

4. Raya and the Last Dragon is playing at the IMAX March 5-28
Need a dose of excitement? It’s just a bag of popcorn away at McWane’s IMAX Dome Theater. Here’s what’s playing on the big screen this March:
- What: Raya and the Last Dragon. When sinister monsters known as the Druun return to threaten the fantasy world of Kumandra, it’s up to one lone warrior to track down the last dragon to help stop the Drunn for good.
- When: March 5-28
- Show Times: 2:15PM, 4:30PM + 7PM
- Price: Adults – $15 | Kids – $14 | Members receive $1 off per ticket

5. From Adventure Halls to Itty Bitty Magic City, there’s always something to explore
