Hammer Down Birmingham! Our beloved pro soccer team, Legion FC, announced today that it will welcome Atlanta United FC back to kick off its 2021 season with a preseason friendly on Sunday, March 28, at 3:30 pm CT at BBVA Field.

This is a rematch from last year’s game, which was played in front of a sold out crowd in the Magic City before the COVID-19 pandemic. By the way, Atlanta won last year’s game 3-2 with a game winner in stoppage time.

“We are excited to have Atlanta United back in Birmingham,” said Legion FC President and General Manager Jay Heaps. “Atlanta continues to be a premier club, not only in Major League Soccer, but also in the world game, and it is an honor to host them as they prepare for the CCL and their upcoming MLS season.”

Atlanta United burst onto the scene in Major League Soccer after their establishment in 2017, winning the 2018 MLS Cup, the 2019 U.S. Open Cup, the 2019 Campeones Cup, and consistently leading the league, and setting records, in attendance.

The match between the Legion and United is set to take place shortly before Atlanta begins its Major League Soccer campaign and the 2021 Scotiabank Concacaf Champions League competition.

Entering its third season in the USL Championship, will officially begin on or around May 1 with the schedule set to be announced later this month. This year’s 2021 squad returns All-League players Bruno Lapa and Alex Crognale and Legion FC standouts Mikey Lopez, Matt VanOekel, Neco Brett, Anderson Asiedu and Prosper Kasim.

Soccer fans will have a great opportunity to watch Atlanta United greats Josef Martinez, Ezequiel Barco, Miles Robinson, George Bello, and former U.S. National Men’s Team goalkeeper Brad Guzan.

“We’re excited to be able to continue our commitment of playing preseason matches throughout the Southeast region, with this year’s match marking the fifth consecutive season we’ve traveled to a neighboring state for a friendly,” Atlanta United President Darren Eales said. “Birmingham FC were gracious hosts last year as we put on a great event for soccer in the Southeast. We’re looking forward to another matchup at BBVA Field as we kick-off our 2021 season.”
