From a brand-new Taco Mama and upcoming coffee cart to anticipated openings happening this spring, there’s a lot of movement taking place in The Magic City. Here’s what’s new in Birmingham.
Here at Bham Now, we love supporting local.
If you’re looking to shop local, but don’t know where to start, check out our local business directory with over 700 businesses.
1. Taco Mama (Vestavia Hills)
Birmingham loves Taco Mama, which is why they’re expanding to their newest location in Vestavia Hills. Opening day is Monday, March 1 in the Vestavia City Center.
If you’ve never been to a Taco Mama, what are you doing? The restaurant whips up all of your favorites like tacos, quesadillas, burritos and more.
2. Cala Coffee
Anyone else running exclusively on coffee these days? Let me introduce you to Birmingham’s newest coffee roasters—Cala Coffee Company. Currently, the coffee shop is solely shipping pre-ordered coffee beans, but they have their sights set on opening the very first coffee cart in Cahaba Heights sooner than later.
“The goal of Cala Coffee is to serve our community of Cahaba Heights by bringing people together via coffee – by means of pour over, aeropress & cold brew.
We look forward to community events, private gatherings, weddings & everything in between.@calacoffeebhm on Instagram
Keep an eye out on their Instagram to see when they’ll be rolling around Cahaba Heights soon.
3. The Barber Bar
Kick back, relax and let the team at The Barber Bar take care of you. Located on Highway 280, the new men’s salon offers a wide range of services like:
- hot lather face shaves
- neck and shoulder massages
- complimentary beer, water and wine
They’ve gotten rave reviews since their opening earlier this year, so stop by and give it a try yourself when you need a touch up.
4. Smallwoods Studios + Boho Vintage + EPolandArt at Ore Mercantile
Ore Mercantile carries some of Birmingham’s coolest brands at their micro-retail shop. Now three brands are joining the lineup of featured businesses, including Smallwoods Studios, Boho Vintage and EPolardArt.
Smallwoods Studios makes some of the cutest, creative items like masks, embroidered bags, bracelets and art supplies.
Boho Vintage shares a curated collection of fun, vintage clothes with a boho vibe. If you’re looking for that unique item that’ll stop you dead in your tracks, check out their space at Ore Mercantile.
EPolandArt creates contemporary abstract illustrations that are all focused on Birmingham landmarks. With vivid colors, contrasting lines and local references, add a bit of The Magic City to your space.

Cannella Gelato & Cafe
Something sweet is coming to Mercantile on Morris and we can’t wait. Soon Birmingham will be welcoming Cannella Gelato & Cafe. Everything will be made on site with locally sourced ingredients. The gelateria will bring a taste of Italy to downtown with items like:
- hand-crafted gelato
- full-service coffee bar
Cannella was previously located in Brookwood Mall, but closed due to COVID-19. Now they’re making their comeback in the beautiful Mercantile on Morris development.
Cahaba Cycles + Garage Sale pop-up shops
One of the pop-up shops will be Cahaba Cycles, an independently owned bike shop here in Birmingham. You may be familiar with them as they have several locations around the metro area.
The other pop-up will be called Garage Sale that will be bringing a vintage retail concept to Parkside with vinyl records, vintage clothing and even a bar to grab a drink…or two!
