The American Institute of Architects (AIA), Birmingham Chapter is the largest chapter in Alabama, with 51% of the state’s architects. Their annual Design Awards exist to recognize excellence in architectural design.

“These awards increase awareness of outstanding architecture and honor architects, clients, consultants, and contractors who work together to improve the built environment.”

Projects are submitted to a jury of five qualified architects who review, contemplate and discuss each entry. This year, the jury was held virtually in Boston, Massachusetts.

There are two awards a submission can receive from the jury:

  • The Merit Award is presented to a project that meets the jury’s requirements for design excellence.
  • The Honor Award is the highest level of recognition that AIA Birmingham bestows to firms for projects displaying exemplary design that exceeds the jury criteria.
