It is hard to believe that back in June of 2019, fellow Bham Now producer Jon Eastwood and I took a tour of the newly opened distillery. We knew right away the place was first class.
Evidently, so did the panel of American spirits experts convened by USA Today to nominate the 20 best new craft distilleries in the USA. To make the list, the distillery had to open within the past three years.
USA Today created the list because craft distilleries are opening all over the country. A booming industry, the number of craft distilleries in the United States has grown by more than 11 percent between 2018 and 2019. The country now has more than 2,000 of them.
More Than a Distillery
Popular from day one, Dread River’s Co-founder Dr. Jeff Dugas, told Bham Now that it was his 25 year hobby of home brewing and becoming friends with a rum distiller, that spawned the idea of opening up a distillery in Birmingham. After a great deal of research into other distilleries, Dugas recognized the importance of adding event space and other amenities.
Dread River has “stuck the landing” on everything they do, Along with great tasting spirits, the tours and tasting room are informative and fantastic. And so are the event spaces, lounge area and food.
Personally, I’ve experienced two wonderful events at Dread River. The entire staff at Bham Now got to enjoy our 2019 Christmas party there. I also attended and wrote about a United Ability Dad’s Night Out gathering that was held this past winter.
