Nothing tastes better on a cool autumn day than a big bowl of gumbo. Here are five local spots cooking up some of the best in the Birmingham area.

1. The Rougaroux

The Rougaroux is one of my favorite hidden gems in Birmingham. Tucked away in Forest Park, it’s known for its laid back feel and authentic cajun menu. And their seafood gumbo is some of the best in town. They have limited indoor and outdoor seating, or you can order for takeout.

One of my favorite things about Homewood Gourmet is that they use all-natural, organic and locally sourced ingredients whenever possible. They offer gourmet sandwiches, salads and homemade sides—including chicken sausage gumbo. Indoor and outdoor seating is available, or swing by and grab a bowl curbside. You can also order online to get it delivered via Grubhub or Waitr.

  • Address: 1919 28th Avenue South, Ste 113, Homewood, AL 35209

4. The Southern Kitchen + Bar

The Southern’s menu is full of all your southern favorites, but their Conecuh Gumbo really caught my eye. It’s made up of a dark roux with chicken, rice, Conecuh sausage and topped with shrimp. I mean, what more could you want from a gumbo? Dine-in or get a bowl delivered via Door Dash.

Get a taste of Louisiana at Cajun Seafood House in Vestavia. Locally owned and operated, this seafood spot serves up a mean cup of gumbo. They offer both a seafood gumbo and a house gumbo, which is half seafood and half chicken. You can dine-in, or order for curbside pick up via phone.
