Turkey Creek Nature Preserve is located in Pinson, Alabama. It’s just 15 over miles, or about 30 minutes, from downtown Birmingham. The 466-acre is a dream for families, conservationists, nature lovers and adventurers alike.
The preserve actually dates back to documented prehistoric Native American inhabitants. It also played a pretty important role in the birth of industry in this area, serving as the home of a grist mill and a small iron forge in the mid-1800s.
Today, it provides outdoor recreation, hand-on education and more to over 100,000 visitors every year.
Your Summer Haven
Biking, hiking, jogging, exploring—what more could you want? Turkey Creek Nature Preserve has it all. There are 5 different trails ranging from easy to moderate difficulty. They’re all open for foot traffic and two are open to bikes.
You can hike the trails individually, or combine them one long connected trail that traverses the preserve. Check out the trail map here.
Turkey Creek also offers plenty of fishing. Just make sure to practice catch and release. Not only is the preserve fun for the whole family, it’s perfect for Fido, too. Dogs are welcome, but must be kept on a physical leash at all times.

Get Out and Explore
I’ve lived all over the Southeast, and although I love my Florida beaches, even I can admit that the natural beauty of Central AL is unmatched. One Birmingham company that’s been part of the community for more than a century wanted to help us show off some of the most unique places in our region.
Adventures with Adamson is a series where we scope out the best day trips within a few hours of Birmingham and bring you along with us. Here’s where we’ve gone so far:
We’ll be continuing this series throughout the summer, so be sure to stay tuned to Bham Now and share our adventures with your road trip buddies. These are destinations you’re definitely not going to want to miss.
Adventure + Preservation
Turkey Creek Nature Preserve was established through a partnership between the state’s Forever Wild Program and the Freshwater Land Trust. Today, in addition to that partnership, it’s co-managed by the Southern Environmental Center at Birmingham-Southern College.
In addition to the incredible scenery, the preserve contains some of the most biologically diverse habitats in this region of Alabama. It’s truly a gorgeous area, and I know I’ll be returning time and time again.
Turkey Creek is home to one of the most popular swimming holes in the state. Tubing down the rapids is a favorite activity, but with that comes crowds. Of courses, crowds are something we’re all trying to minimize and avoid right now.
The preserve wanted to stay open to the public and make sure people could still enjoy one of the most beautiful spots around. Here’s a preview of some of the safety measures they’ve introduced:
- Hiking, biking and fishing only
- No swimming or wading permitted
- No parking or driving beyond the Blue Hole parking lot
- All restrooms will remain closed
- No gatherings of more than 10 people
- Visitors must maintain 6 feet of separation

The Car: 2020 Ford Mustang
Is there a more quintessential “cool car” than the Ford Mustang? I don’t think so. Our friends at Adamson Ford hooked us up with a 2020 Mustang and I have to admit, I was living out my teenage fantasy while whipping this around.
As a grown-up, I was actually quite impressed with the way it drove. It was super smooth for a sportier-sized car, and still had all the convenient, top-of-the-line features we know and love in Ford vehicles.
Not to mention, this Mustang was equipped with EcoBoost, which bumps it up to 32MPG on the highway. Our 30-mile (round-trip) adventure used approximately one single gallon of gas.
After this road trip, I was about ready to trade in my ride and upgrade to something just as ready to hit the highway as I am.
Be Ready for Anything
If you’re gearing up for your next adventure, Adamson Ford is ready to get you there. Whether you need a new car, a tune-up or anything in-between, they’ll treat you like family.
