Learning Through Faith
Last year, over 600 kids from across the greater Birmingham area filled Asbury UMC’s building for their yearly VBS program. But with social distancing still in effect, Asbury UMC has decided to go virtual—island excursion style. Good thing all that e-learning and work Zoom meetings have trained us all well the past few months!
Through music, dancing, science and crafts, kids will discover a fun, active and immersive faith experience.
“We’re really excited and we’re doing our best to make this feel as ‘real’ as possible. We’ve got supply bags to give families with everything they need—all they have to do is watch and they’ll be transported to a tropical island.”
Angie Gongwer, Children’s Ministry Director, Asbury UMC
What’s super exciting is that Asbury UMC is welcoming back Crosskid Nation Star Andy Wilson—a Nashville-based writer, performer, producer and worship leader who specializes in engaging programs for ministries of children and students.
Wilson will perform brand-new energetic music during VBS that is sure to get kids singing, dancing and growing spiritually.

The Daily Schedule
The VBS schedule may be a bit different than previous years at Asbury UMC, but it will still be filled with fun, Scripture and togetherness.
Simply set aside one hour each day during July 13-16 to log in and set sail from your very own living room
Here’s a look at the daily schedule:
- 8:55AM: Sign in for a quick virtual chat
- 9AM: Kickoff to VBS with worship, singing, dancing, missions and Bible story
- 9:20-9:45AM: Science experiments and crafts
- 9:45AM: Celebrate the day with worship and closing prayer
The fun doesn’t stop there! Though VBS at Asbury UMC is going virtual to maintain social distancing, they still want to give kids a sense of community and togetherness.
Each night at 6:30PM during July 13-16, staff members from Asbury Kids Town‘s children’s ministry will host a VBS Zoom call. This is the perfect time for kids to show off crafts and science projects and chat with friends. The main goal—togetherness.
“VBS is the biggest way we can connect with our kids. Our hope is that each child leaves knowing Jesus loves them, that they matter, that they are valued, and that their positivity is needed in our world.”
Angie Gongwer, Children’s Ministry Director, Asbury UMC
