Cinco de Mayo is right around the corner and we could all use a fun pick-me-up. Although there won’t be parades and parties this year, you can still have your own fiesta at home. Here are some ideas to help you celebrate Cinco de Mayo in Birmingham including where to get tacos, margs and churros.

First Things First—What is Cinco de Mayo?

For many of us, Cinco de Mayo is a time to celebrate with friends, eat yummy tacos and get turnt on a few margaritas. There’s nothing wrong with that, but let’s learn a little about this fun holiday.

Also known as the Anniversary of the Battle of Puebla, Cinco de Mayo commemorates the Mexican Army’s victory against the French Empire. It’s not Mexico’s version of Independence Day but is used as a day to celebrate Mexican culture and heritage.

Where to get your Cinco de Mayo eats

Now on to my personal favorite part—FOOD. What’s a party without good eats? Trick question. It’s not a party. Get your grub on with these local restaurants having Cinco de Mayo deals.

Moss Rock Tacos & Tequila

Moss Rock Tacos & Tequila is going to throw an epic celebration with their Cinco Dias de Mayo celebration. It’s five days of fun including:

  • $2 tacos
  • Taco party kits
  • Margarita kits
  • Merch
  • Giveaway prizes

BONUS: They’re hosting a virtual party to wrap things up!

Tostadas

Cinco de Mayo also happens to be Tostadas’ one year anniversary. They’re celebrating in a big way by holding a contest and the prize is free tacos for a year. Let’s just say I have my eyes on the prize.

La Paz

La Paz in Crestline has your fiesta covered with family meals to-go. You can choose from tacos, fajitas and taco salad. Fair warning that a food coma may occur.

Unos Tacos

Since the holiday also happens to fall on Taco Tuesday, Unos Tacos will be doing $2 tacos as well as happy hour deals on margaritas and coronas all day long. Check out this article for more deets.

These were just a few local restaurants serving up Cinco de Mayo deals. For more ideas of where to get Mexican food curbside, we’ve got you covered.

Margaritas because it wouldn’t be a party without ’em

Mayawell

It only makes sense to start with one of Birmingham’s newest cocktail bars that specializes in tequila and mezcal. Whatever you need to get your Cinco de Mayo party started, they’re serving it up curbside. Some of their margarita flavors include:

  • Jalapeno Strawberry
  • Spicy
  • Classic, the tried and true flavor

Sol y Luna

Sol y Luna margaritas are *chef’s kiss*. Even if you don’t want to commit to a whole margarita kit, they offer half packs that include Hornitas tequila and a half gallon of their house made margarita mix.

The Louis Bar

The Louis Bar in the Pizitz Food Hall rolled out a fresh lineup of margarita kits. Whether you’re celebrating with friends via Zoom or with family, they’re serving up kits for a party of one or many. Flavors include:

  • Classic
  • Watermelon
  • Paloma (Grapefruit + squirt soda)
  • Pomegranate

Birmingham sure doesn’t lack in the margarita department and honestly, the list could go on. For even more ideas of where to get some delicious margs curbside, this article is a good place to start.

Churros! Need I say more?
