The Highland Park Community Garden is located in Rushton Park on Highland Avenue. Members across the Birmingham community helped to make it possible. Carlos Hernandez of ArchitectureWorks designed the garden pro bono, Brasfield & Gorrie donated the cost of materials and Independent Presbyterian Church is the garden’s 501(c)3 backer.

The garden includes the following:

  • 21 raised four-by-eight garden beds
  • Toolshed
  • Covered space for composting and outdoor classes

Specific classes aren’t planned just yet, but the Highland Park Community Garden Committee has a list of suggestions from residents they plan to cover. The garden will also partner with community organizations for classes on topics like plant propagation, climate change and sustainability.

The first class is planned for April. Stay tuned to Bham Now for more info!

Don’t miss the garden’s ribbon-cutting event this Friday!

When: Friday, March 6 at 11AM

Where: Highland Park Community Garden. 3000 Highland Ave S, Birmingham, Alabama 35205

But leave your shears and shovels at home—the garden won’t officially open to gardeners for use until Monday, March 16th.

Who can use the garden?

The garden isn’t open for use to the general public. Residents of Highland Park had the opportunity to register for a lottery to secure a plot until February 15.

This week, The Highland Park Community Garden Committee is hosting a garden plot drawing event on March 6 at 6PM in Rojo’s side room. 96 lucky gardeners will be selected.
