Is one of your New Year’s resolutions to be active? If so, signing up for a run can be a great motivator. Here are six runs coming up in Birmingham in January and February.

From one-mile fun runs to the big one—the Mercedes-Benz Marathon—there’s something for everyone!

1) MLK Day 5K Drum Run

Looking for a way to commemorate Martin Luther King Day? The MLK Day 5K Drum Run brings people together to celebrate one of the civil rights movement’s most iconic leaders. The race starts and ends on Fourth Avenue South in the heart of the Civil Rights District downtown. Drum lines from schools across Birmingham will be providing music to keep up spirits (and the pace!).

When: January 18, 2020 at 8AM
Where:
1700 4th North Birmingham, AL  35203

The Birmingham Track Club (BTC) is hosting its annual Adam’s Heart Runs event, the first of their BTC Race Series, on January 25. Although the event is at Oak Mountain, this is NOT a trail race—the 5k, 10k and 10-mile runs take place on paved roads. Clumsy folks like myself are thankful.

When: January 25, 2020 at 7:30AM
Where: Oak Mountain State Park’s Dogwood Pavilion. 200 Terrace Dr.
Pelham, AL US 35124
Sign up.

3) The Great Amazing Race Birmingham Adventure Run

The Great Amazing Race isn’t your traditional run. First, it doesn’t start until 2PM (a chance to sleep in on race day?!). Second, this run spices things up a bit with challenges along the way. Two-person teams complete tasks throughout the 1.5-mile course at Red Mountain Park. Enlist a friend and pretend you’re on the popular “Amazing Race” TV show.

When: February 8, 2020 at 2PM
Where: Red Mountain Park. 2011 Frankfurt Dr., Birmingham, AL 35211
Sign up.

4) Mercedes-Benz Marathon

This one is the biggest road race in Alabama. If you’re ready to run a marathon, the Mercedes-Benz Marathon is a great opportunity. It covers most of downtown and its surrounding neighborhoods. It’s also a Boston Marathon Qualifier.

If you’re not Boston-ready (or ready to run a marathon in general), no worries—there’s also a relay option where you can sign up with friends to run a shorter distance! Check out their other events, too. It’s sure to be a fun weekend.

When: February 16, 2020 at 7:03AM (you read that right—7:03, not 7:30!)
Where:
Railroad Park. 1600 1st Ave S, Birmingham, AL 35233
Sign up.

5) Mountain Brook Fraternal Order of Police 5k and 1 Mile Fun Run

The Mountain Brook Fraternal Order of Police is sponsoring this run in February. Proceeds from the event will go to The WellHouse, a group that helps victims of human trafficking—a serious issue in Birmingham and the Southeast.

When: February 22 at 9AM
Where: Crestline Village. 3785 Jackson Blvd., Mountain Brook, AL US 35213
Sign up.

6) Steeple to Steeple Run 10K, 5K & Fun Run

The sixth annual Steeple to Steeple Run is coming up next month. The race starts and ends in Patriot Park in West Homewood. Proceeds go to the United Methodist Children’s Home, which provides a safe and secure home environment for children from Alabama and Northwest Florida who can’t live with their families. Why not spend Leap Day supporting a good cause?

When: February 29, 2020 at 7:30AM
Where: Patriot Park. 710 Oak Grove Rd, Homewood, AL 35209
Sign up.

It’s time to lace up those running shoes, Birmingham. Have you signed up for any races yet? What did we miss? Let us know @BhamNow!
