You’ve heard of Tre Luna Restaurant in Hoover, and if you’re lucky, you’ve eaten there. The restaurant offers a variety of Italian-inspired dishes like homemade pastas and pizzas, plus an exciting list of wines, beers and specialty cocktails. But did you know they also offer catering services that will make throwing a party a snap?

Here’s a behind the scenes peek at the menu and services of Tre Luna Catering, and how the owners have worked to make the business a growing local success in Birmingham.

Meet the Mooneys

If you’re like me, learning about the owners of a local Birmingham business is always fascinating. What drives them, where their ideas come from—it’s all so interesting.

So I’m excited to introduce you to the owners of Tre Luna Catering, Brian and Erin Mooney. This sweet duo have a rather extensive background in the food service industry.

Brian discovered his passion for cooking when he was just 14 years old. It was during his first real job working at Massimo’s Italian Restaurant in Boca Raton, Florida. Like most with a passion for culinary arts, his favorite place became the kitchen.

After graduating from the Florida Culinary Institute, Brian met Erin who also had a background in restaurant service and event planning.

The two married, moved to Erin’s hometown of Birmingham and bam! The dream team was born.

Brian continued to make a name for himself in the Birmingham food scene, further refining his skills and style by working under Frank Stitt, award-winning Chef of Bottega Restaurant. Brian was also Executive Chef at The Summit Club, Greystone Country Club and The University Club.

In 2014, the Mooneys were given the opportunity to take over an existing catering business whose owners were retiring after 30 years in service. They grabbed hold of the opportunity.

They changed the name of the business to Tre Luna Catering on February 1, 2014, and since then, they’ve become one of Birmingham’s most reputable catering companies.

What’s in a name?

Tre Luna. The name rolls off the tongue in such magical fluidity, doesn’t it?

But how did they land on the name? According to Erin, it was inspired by her and Brian’s three children—their “three moons.”
