Right next to Soho Retro in Homewood, you’ll find a little salon called Sciascia’s. Inside, you’ll find four friendly stylists who are dedicated to delighting their customers.

1—Sciascia’s has a fun name: it’s pronounced “Sha-Sha” (rhymes with haha)
Bham Now photographer Matthew Niblett and I had one question when we walked into the salon. “How do you say my last name?” said co-owner Angela Sciascia.
“Yes!” we both replied, and were so surprised when she said “sha-sha.” That hadn’t even made it onto our list of possible pronunciations.
I did a little digging around the Internet and found out it’s a Sicilian name, which conjured up some nice images like this town and volcano scene from Sicily, an island in Southern Italy. But I digress.
The fun name fits the fun, easygoing atmosphere. These women know how to make you feel right at home.
2—Some of Sciascia’s customers have been coming for decades
While Matthew was taking pictures, I chatted with a man who said Dona Gillis has been doing his hair for more than 40 years, with one short break when she moved to Dallas for a minute.
He had a full head of gorgeous white hair, and apparently found just what he needed in a hairdresser when he met Dona all those years ago.
From what I hear, he’s not the only happy customer who’s been coming for years.
3—You can find boutique items at Sciascia’s while you’re getting beautified
A little shelf with lacy bras here, a wall of purses there. You can find boutique-like items scattered thoughtfully throughout the store. Also, chocolate. Yum.
4—Sciascia’s offers a range of services
We already mentioned male manicures, but I bet you didn’t know Sciascia’s also offers these services:

- Haircuts and styling, including a trademarked hair smoothing technique called a Brazilian blowout
