Happy 80th Birthday Savage’s Bakery!

With all the new restaurants opening up throughout the  area, we thought it would be appropriate to celebrate a “Birmingham Original’s” birthday – Savage’s Bakery.

Located at 2916 18th Street South in Homewood, Savage’s was first opened by William Savage in the Highland Plaza shopping center (the current location of Taj India and the former Western Supermarket) on Highland Avenue in Southside in 1939, according to Bhamwiki.

In 1947, the bakery was one of the original tenants of Mountain Brook’s Crestline Heights Shopping Center at 64 Church Street.

It moved to its current location in Homewood in the 1950s. It has been owned by Van Scott since 1978. His daughter Margaret Scott currently manages the business.

This month, the Homewood Star published an outstanding feature profiling Savage’s owner Van Scott, his daughter Elizabeth and the staff.

In honor of Savage’s 80th Birthday, Bham Now dropped by the legendary family owned and operated bakery to sample our favorite… the  “Meltaways” and capture the sights and “smells” of this classic bakery.
