June 5 is Global Running Day: celebrate with these Birmingham runs all summer!
Reading time: 4 minutes
It might be a little toasty outside, but that’s not going to stop me from celebrating Global Running Day on June 5th. (It will stop me from running past 7:30 a.m., though.) Read on for information about runs in Birmingham this summer!
Trak Shak Group Run
The Trak Shak in Homewood has group runs every Wednesday, so it’s kind of perfect that Global Running Day falls on this day this year. To commemorate the occasion, they’re offering highly discounted closeout shoes, and if of you spend at least $120 you’ll get a free t-shirt! Sweet.
Where: 2839 18th St S, Birmingham, AL 35209
When: June 5 at 5:30 p.m.
Length: 3 and 5-mile courses
Cost: Free!
Here2Beer 5k
The Here2Beer 5k starts and ends at Avondale Brewery on June 27. It also starts and ends with an eight-ounce beer. I’m here for a beer post-run, but trying one before running three miles in the Alabama heat seems risky. Regardless, it sounds fun! And the course is flat, which is hard to come by in Bham. If you miss the first one, there are two more Here2Beer 5k’s at Avondale this summer on July 11 and August 1. There’s an awards ceremony after the last event in August. Cheers!
Where: 201 41st St S, Birmingham, AL 35222
When: June 27, July 11 and August 1 at 6:00 p.m.
Length: 5k
Cost: $35 competitive division, $30 run only (price increases after June 15)
I’m with Mike 5k
The I’m with Mike 5k, in memory of Mike Slive, benefits a great cause–the Mike Slive Foundation for Prostate Cancer Research. There’s also a one-mile walk. This year’s event is at Little Donkey in Homewood.
Where: 2823 Central Ave., Birmingham, AL US 35209
When: June 15 at 8:00 a.m.

Birmingham Track Club Peavine Falls Run
Held every 4th of July, the Peavine Falls Run is approximately eight miles of trail running. It’s part of the Birmingham Track Club’s Race Series. It has an elevation gain of 764 feet, so practice those hills before signing up for this one!

When: July 4 at 7:00 a.m.
Length: Approx. 8 miles
Cost: $25 until July 2
Save the O’s 5k
The Save the O’s 5k benefits the Norma Livingston Ovarian Cancer Foundation. According to the foundation’s website, ovarian cancer affects 1 in 71 women–its more common than you might think. Give back and run a few miles at Greystone Country Club!

Just a Call Away 5k and Fun Run
This is the fifth annual Just a Call Away 5k, which benefits the Crisis Center–an organization that supports people experiencing a personal crisis or mental health issue. The event is held at Sloss Furnaces, and if the 5k seems a little too far, there’s also a one-mile fun run.
Where: 1236, 20 32nd St N, Birmingham, AL 35222
When: August 17 at 8:00 a.m. (Fun Run at 9:00 a.m.)
Length: 5k and one-mile fun run

Ridge to Blazing Ridge Trail Race
This race isn’t for the faint of heart (or inexperienced runner). The Ridge to Blazing Ridge Trail Race is 10.5 or 21 miles…in August. Ouch. It also has an elevation change of almost 11,000 feet. Double ouch. If you’re a runner looking for a challenge, this could be the trail race for you.
Where: Oak Mountain State Park (meet at Rosebud Pavilion)
When: August 24 at 7:00 a.m.
Length: 10.5 or 21 miles
Cost: $50 for 10-miler, $75 for 20-miler until August 11
