Four of the top 20 healthcare general contractors in the United States reside in Birmingham, Alabama, as stated in an annual survey conducted by Modern Healthcare. The ranking is based on dollar volume for completed healthcare construction projects.

According to a report in the Birmingham Business Journal, Brasfield & Gorrie topped the national list, followed closely behind by Robins & Morton, which came in second.

The other two companies making the top 20, included Hoar Construction coming in at 8th and Doster Construction placing 20th in the national ranking.

Brasfield & Gorrie landed the top spot with $969 million in dollar volume for completed healthcare construction projects in 2018. The company built more than 3.7 million square feet of healthcare projects in 2018.

“With more than 50 years of experience in healthcare construction, our team brings the expertise of generations to our work in this market sector,” stated Brasfield & Gorrie Vice President and Regional Director of Business Development Hannah Wickham in a press release announcing the ranking. “Modern Healthcare has consistently ranked us among the top 10 health care contractors for more than 20 years, and we’re honored to continue our work for our valued healthcare clients.”

Robins & Morton reported $953 million in revenue and more than 3.5 million square feet in completed healthcare construction projects across 19 states in 2018, according to a Robins & Morton news release.

Since the inception of the Modern Healthcare Construction and Design survey in 1986, Robins & Morton has been ranked for 33 consecutive years, each year among the top seven contractors, including six number one rankings, added the company.
