Cookie Dough Magic, Oak Hill, Tortugas received 95 and above food service scores in May

Several Birmingham area food service establishments, including Cookie Dough Magic in Avondale, Flemings Steakhouse at the Summit, Oak Hill Bar & Grill in Homewood and Tortugas at Railroad Park received 95 and above on their health inspection scores over the past 30 days.

As a public service, Bham Now publishes monthly Jefferson County Department of Health restaurant inspection scores and profiles local places that were scored in the past few weeks.

How are the inspections conducted?

According to the Jefferson County Department of Health, the agency, “regularly inspects establishments in Jefferson County where food is prepared or sold for human consumption. Two type of inspections, scored and alternative (non-scored), are performed throughout the year.”

The food service inspection scores are updated regularly on the Jefferson County Department of Health website. In this food service inspection edition, the scores were received after May 1st. Here are our featured establishments for this month.

Cookie Dough Magic – 100

When Cookie Dough Magic opened in Avondale last year the public went crazy. In fact, the story about its opening was Bham Now’s most popular in 2018. It is nice to re-visit Cookie Dough Magic eight months later announcing that they scored a 100 on their food service inspection.

Want to know how good Tortugas is? Just check out all of their accolades on the homepage of their website. According to Gabi Hembree, Bham Now’s marketing coordinator and resident foodie (seriously every recommendation she gives is 100%), Tortugas’ Carne Special Chicago-Style Pizza is her #1 pie pick.

Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse and Wine Bar – 98

Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse and Wine Bar is located at the Summit on the lowest level closest to U.S. 280 is known for their 35. oz Tomahawk steak special for “two” and wine selection. In fact, since 2010, Fleming’s has received Wine Spectator’s Award of Excellence  honors.

Oak Hill Bar and Grill – 97

One of downtown Homewood’s most beloved neighborhood restaurants, Oak Hill is a favorite for all the active folks next door at the Track Shak.  Opened in 1999, the place is known for its daily lunch special, $1 Beer Wednesday and live music on the weekends.
