The story involves nerdy florist, Seymour, who works at mean Mr. Mushnik’s flower shop, and has a major crush on his co-worker, Audrey.

After an eclipse of the sun, Seymour finds a mysterious plant that he affectionately calls Audrey II. The plant keeps growing and growing, and develops a mean taste for blood (as well as a very soulful singing voice).

Will Audrey II take over the world? Does Seymour get the girl? You’ll laugh out loud and tap your feet finding out!

Bham Now caught up with local performer, Jessica Clark, who will be playing a lead role as Audrey, in Little Shop of Horrors.

We asked Jessica how she got involved with the Red Mountain Theatre Company and what you can expect from this upcoming production.

Bham Now: Red Mountain Theatre Company is a great stage to see talented local performers in Birmingham. Tell us about your involvement.

Jessica Clark: This is probably my twentieth…something year with Red Mountain Theatre Company! I started with them as a student, back when it was still called Summerfest in the early ninetys and my mom was also an improv teacher and an actress for them as well.

My first production was ‘Fiddler on the Roof’, I played a little boy! I’ve worked with Red Mountain for years and consider them family!

Bham Now: Tell us about your role in Little Shop of Horrors

Jessica Clark: I play Audrey, the kind and sweet arrangement maker at Mr. Mushnik’s flower shop. She is the Fay Wray, damsel in distress who has quite a tragic storyline, but she’s also a lot of fun to play and has some great numbers too.

Little Shop of Horrors is a story about what would happen if a killer plant were to fall from outer space and take over the earth! It actually started as a movie by Roger Corman and then evolved into a Broadway musical in the eighties and is now here in Birmingham, Alabama, in 2019!

Bham Now: What songs will you be singing?

Jessica Clark: The two most famous songs that Audrey sings are ‘Suddenly Seymour’, a heart melting ballad sung with Seymour, and ‘Somewhere that’s Green’, a song where Audrey opens her heart to her hopes and dreams of happiness.

Bham Now: Finally, what will people be talking about in the car on the way home from Little Shop of Horrors?

Jessica Clark: I hope they’ll be talking about the songs, the performances and how much fun the story is. It’s just a fun musical! You’re guaranteed to have a great time, we’ve got an amazing cast, a lot of really funny actors, and amazing singers!
