Who is Yoshi?

This isn’t Nintendo’s beloved dinosaur character nor a sushi restaurant. Yoshi is a subscription-based gas delivery service that fills up your tank at your parked car.  Best part? No lines. No hassles. You don’t even need to be there!

Rock, Paper, Scissors and a Vision

The idea for Yoshi came about in 2015 on a frigid winter day in Boston, Massachusetts, when Harvard business students Bryan Frist and Nick Alexander were running late and had to stop for gas. Neither Frist nor Alexander wanted to brave the frigid temperature, so they did what everyone does in a “you, not me” situation: play rock, paper, scissors.

This quick game led Frist and Alexander toward a new business vision: how to make the task of getting gas a more enjoyable experience.

“Nothing has changed since the gas pump was originally invented in 1910. We decided we wanted to find a way to improve the experience of getting gas and make it easier for the customer.”

Bryan Frist, President and Co-Founder, Yoshi

A Growing Business

Yoshi first opened for business in Palo Alto, California, in 2015. Frist was actually Yoshi’s very first Field Technician and Driver, while Alexander created the first app! The company now serves 20 cities and 15 states with hopes to one day take the business international.

Why Birmingham?

What’s especially cool is that Birmingham is the very first city in Alabama to get Yoshi, and is also the company’s first city launch of 2019.

Why was Birmingham chosen as Yoshi’s first Alabama location and launch of the year?

“Birmingham is an up-and-coming city. Of our 20 markets, we’ve seen a lot of other cities similar to Birmingham do well with Yoshi. I think those in the area have a desire for up-and-coming technology and new and exciting products.”

Bryan Frist

I think Frist has Birmingham pegged pretty well, don’t you agree?

Where Does Yoshi Serve?

Just like other delivery services, Yoshi is available in select areas of town. Here’s the rundown of eligible services areas across the Birmingham metro area:

  • Birmingham (downtown)
  • Homewood
  • Hoover
  • Vestavia
  • Mountain Brook
  • Highland Park
  • Cahaba Heights
  • Pelham

If you don’t live in one of Yoshi’s service areas, don’t worry! One of the great aspects of Yoshi is that it’s all about where your vehicle is parked, not where you live. For example, if you live in Alabaster, Trussville or Leeds, but drive to work in downtown Birmingham (one of Yoshi’s service areas), you can take advantage of the service. Pretty rad, right?

How It Works

So here’s how the Yoshi app works.

  1. Download the free Yoshi app via the App Store or Google Play or text “BHAMNOW” to their customer support team at 650.285.4778 for a member of their friendly staff to walk you through the process.
  2. Enter your vehicle info and schedule your preferred service date, time and location.
  3. Add additional maintenance services to your service order when needed. As you add more services, your gas prices drop!

Yoshi memberships are $16 per month for an annual subscription and $20 per month for a monthly subscription. Gas prices are set to match the lowest gas prices in your zip code. Plus, it’s all Top Tier Exxon Mobil Synergy fuel, so you know you are getting the highest quality.

But check this out. When you sign up to be a Yoshi Member, not only is the first month’s membership FREE, but you will also receive a $10 account credit to use toward any Yoshi service. Just use code BHAMNOW when signing up on the Yoshi app!

What will you do with your extra time?  We’re going to hit the trails at Red Mountain and maybe catch another show at the Lyric.
