That is when the long wait will be over. On March 9th at BBVA Compass Field, the Birmingham Legion Football Club will kickoff its inaugural season.
To say the Legion has been busy preparing for the 2019 season would be an understatement. Every 3-4 days there have been player acquisition and club announcements.
We know you don’t want to miss the latest news, so here is an update on our Legion. HAMMER DOWN!
First Match – March 9
As mentioned earlier, our league – The USL Championship – released the opening fixtures for the 2019 season. The first game of the inaugural Birmingham Legion FC season will be a home match against Bethlehem Steel FC on March 9, 2019 at BBVA Compass Field.
How appropriate. Two legendary steel towns. The Steel is an affiliate team of the MLS Philadelphia Union club.
Tip for the Magic City Brigade (the Legion’s supporter group). Want to get under a resident of Bethlehem’s skin. Pronounce Bethlehem…. BethleHAM. It drives the locals crazy.

Drumroll… new inaugural away jersey
Earlier this week, Birmingham Legion FC released the first jersey for the club’s 2019 inaugural USL Championship season. The first kit in club history is the Gold Standard edition, utilizing our core color, Molten Gold, to symbolize our character and sportsmanship, and to set the bar for the club at the highest level.
“Our 2019 jerseys will exemplify who we are as a club,” said Legion FC President and General Manager Jay Heaps. “We have a gold standard set of goals for the club. The Molten Gold in this kit exemplifies that commitment.”
The white and Molten Gold inaugural kit prominently features title partner Red Diamond Coffee & Tea on the front and jersey partner Pepsi on the back. The Legion FC rally cry “Hammer Down” adorns the jersey between the shoulder blades and is paired with our club symbols, the hammer and anvil.
Need to purchase a jersey for a holiday gift? They are available in the Legion FC Team Shop at 2213 1st Ave S and at www.bhmlegion.shop for $79.99 (adult) and $69.99 (children), and will be available for purchase at all Legion FC home games. The Team Shop is open Monday to Friday from 8 AM to 5 PM and will observe extended holiday hours on Saturday, December 22 from 10 AM to 3 PM, Sunday, December 23 from 12 PM to 4 PM and Monday, December 24 from 9 AM to 12 PM.
Buffalo Rock – Pepsi Sponsorship
For us old timers, in the 80s and 90s, Buffalo Rock always fielded a men’s soccer team in the adult leagues around town. The company has gone back to its soccer roots with the announcement last week that the Birmingham Legion FC has secured a multi-year partnership with Buffalo Rock Company – Pepsi, securing exclusive pouring and marketing rights for the local distributor to four beverage categories. As the official soft drink of Legion FC, Pepsi will also be featured on the back of primary and secondary kits throughout the term.
Three other Buffalo Rock products are also included in the deal: Aquafina, Official Water of Birmingham Legion FC, Gatorade, Official Isotonic of Birmingham Legion FC, and Mtn Dew AMP, Official Energy Drink of Birmingham Legion FC. All four products will be featured at Legion FC home matches and as a part of pre- and in-game match presentation, club digital promotion and retail activation.
Players – We’ve got a Goalie!
The Legion have acquired a number of players, you always need an anchor, a solid goalkeeper. Pending league and federation approval, the Legion signed earlier this month goalkeeper Matt Van Oekel fro USL Championship’s OKC Energy FC .
The 32 year old keeper has been successful everywhere he has played, which includes joining Real Salt Lake from the MLS in 2017.
