5 reasons to attend Santa’s Gingerbread Workshop at McWane Science Center on December 15
Reading time: 5 minutes
It’s beginning to taste like the holidays at McWane Science Center as they prepare for their inaugural Santa’s Gingerbread Workshop. Here are five reasons to slather on some icing and show off your engineering and design skills at this family-friendly event happening on December 15. Tickets are on sale now!
1. There’s a 12-ft. Candy Buffet
Yes, you read that right. At Santa’s Gingerbread Worship at McWane Science Center, there will be a 12-ft. buffet brimming with candy and treats to decorate your gingerbread house.
Gumdrops, peppermints, m&ms, chocolate chips, lollipops and peppermint sticks are just some of the tasty decorations that will be available. There will also be lots of dry cereals to choose from to create detailed accents like roof shingles.
2. You Can Visit with Santa
Guess what else you can find at Santa’s Gingerbread Workshop—Santa Claus, of course! Ole’ Saint Nick will be at McWane during the event for special visits over hot cocoa and cookies. Be sure to bring your camera for lasting memories!
3. Kids Can Learn at Play
Sure, you may be surrounded by tasty gingerbread houses, candy and frosting, but there is plenty of learning that goes on too—and it all happens while having fun and nibbling on sweet treats!
Kids of all ages will learn engineering concepts while helping construct a one-of-a-kind gingerbread house. The Early Childhood Education Department at McWane Science Center has put lots of love and work into the event to make the STEM concepts understandable for citizens of Itty Bitty Magic City (kindergarten and younger). This means even the littlest of engineers will be learning useful educational skills.
“Unlike the traditional decorating of a pre-built house, families will put the E in STEAM (Science, Technology, ENGINEERING, Art, Math) while building their own gingerbread house. They’ll practice engineering processes and use their creative design skills, as well. And, with admission to McWane included, families will be able to practice those same skills at many of the exhibits, including the Imagination Blocks and the Catenary Arch.”
Peggy Chowing, Vice President of Education, McWane Science Center.
4. You’ll Have Access to McWane Science Center’s Adventure Halls
What do you do after you’ve created your gingerbread masterpiece? Well, I suppose you could eat it, but there’s something much better to do—check out all of the exhibits that make McWane Science Center such an exciting place.
By purchasing an admission package to Santa’s Gingerbread Workshop, you are also granted all-day admission to McWane Science Center’s Adventure Halls. This means an entire day of science, learning and fun!
Take a ride on the McWane Train. Fly like a reindeer via zip line. Or speed down the huge slide.
You can also check out McWane Science Center’s annual holiday exhibit, the Magic of Model Trains. This will be the 13th year the Magic of Model Trains has chugged its way into the hearts of those in Birmingham, and this year is no exception. Featuring over a dozen different displays with trains of every shape and size, the exhibit offers hours of entertainment for you and the fam! Read more.
5. You Can Catch a Holiday Flick at the IMAX Dome
A trip to Santa’s Gingerbread Workshop at McWane Science Center means access to the IMAX Dome Theater. Santa vs. The Snowman will be playing throughout the month of December. What better way to watch this exciting holiday flick than under the 5-story, 79 ft. diameter tilted, domed screen at the IMAX?
The Polar Express will also be playing Saturday, December 15 and Sunday, December 16 at 3PM.
Catch the show at 10:00AM, 12:00PM and 3:00PM.
