Blair Pharmacy
Blair Pharmacy in Alabaster opened the day after Christmas 2017. Daniel Blair serves as pharmacist, wife Kim runs the operation, and a robot named Harold handles all special medication packaging needs. Goodbye, disorganized pill bottles. Hello, neat and tidy pill packs.
“We’re the only ones in Shelby County offering that level of packaging, and only one of two in central Alabama. We do it for free and then we’ll deliver it to our patients for free as well,” Kim said.
The Blairs also make their own old-fashioned, small-batch batch soaps, and some of their sudsy recipes use local craft beers, such as Interstellar’s Space Mule ginger and Good People’s oatmeal stout. They source other gift shop items from local, small, family-owned and/or like-minded businesses.

Ritch’s Pharmacy
Of the locally owned Birmingham pharmacies in our guide, Ritch’s Pharmacy in Mountain Brook has one of the longest histories—a whopping 71 years. Current owners and pharmacists Ralph and Rebecca Sorrell have been married 32 years.
I have benefited from the thorough wellness checks that Ritch’s Pharmacy offers (they cost about $50 with most insurance plans and are free for state employees). Annual checks of your biometrics, cholesterol, blood pressure and glucose are key to preventive medicine.
Ritch’s also has an excellent gift shop. They sell spa-quality products like Ahava, made from Dead Sea minerals, as well as Mason Pearson Brushes, an English brand that’s had a loyal following since the 1860s.
Ritch’s Pharmacy can also help patrons find just the right medical equipment. For instance, is a standard or an all-terrain walker best?
