There’s a new race in town! Magic Moments and Children’s of Alabama are proud to announce the inaugural BHM26.2 race series coming to Birmingham on Sunday, April 15, 2018.
READY, SET…TRAIN! With 6 months to prepare, there is plenty of time to get ready for this worthwhile event!
Check out these suggestions on how to prepare for a half marathon that is 6 months out!
- Try to run at least three times a week: Weekday runs should average about 30 minutes (no longer) and your weekend long run needs to be at least three miles.
- Since Birmingham is so hilly, plan at least one run a week on hills.
- Every other week, increase your long run by 1.5 miles until you’re run/walking 13 to 14 miles weekly.
- Your longest long run should fall two weeks before your half-marathon.
- On no running days, walk, swim or simply rest up!
Resolute Running Training Center is the official training group for the BHM 26.2 & 13.1. In addition to offering training programs for both the full and half marathon, the RRTC will also provide pace group leaders for both races.
The 20 week full marathon (26.2) training program will begin the week of November 27, 2017. The 12 week half marathon (13.1) training program will begin the week of January 22, 2018. sign up at resoluterunning.com.
Comprised of a Marathon, Half Marathon, Team Relay and Fun Run, each race length will start and finish at Railroad Park, a 19-acre park in the heart of downtown Birmingham.
The race series will also introduce a marathon course that – for the first time in Birmingham – has no repeats or loops.
Magic Moments Executive Director, Sandy Naramore explains a little more:
“The BHM26.2 provides the opportunity for runners to interact with the children benefiting directly from the proceeds of the race. “Each mile marker tells a different Alabama child’s journey that has received a special moment from Magic Moments as well as been treated by the Alabama Center for Childhood Cancer and Blood Disorders at Children’s of Alabama.”
The marathon course, entirely downtown, will be a 2019 Boston Marathon qualifier race. Runners will experience Birmingham’s history and growth first hand, as they run past our unique cityscape.
Relay teams will be able to run the full course, divided into 4, 3, 7, 4 and 8 mile legs. Finally, the fun run, for everyone, including children accompanied by an adult, is a one-mile tour of downtown Birmingham.
As things wind up, Runners will finish at Railroad Park for an after-race party with Jim ‘N Nick’s Bar-B-Q, live music and a kids’ zone.
Magic Moments is the only wish-granting organization devoted exclusively to children in Alabama with chronic life-threatening illnesses, and the Alabama Center for Childhood Cancer and Blood Disorders at Children’s of Alabama.
So plan to come out and race, and run for a great cause!
