Birmingham-based EBSCO Industries has 6,000 employees in 25 businesses around the globe.
EBSCO is a diverse organization with many businesses, ranging from information services for libraries to real estate development to fishing lures and insurance services.
Kat Magnuson, EBSCO’s training program manager, talked with Bham Now about what sets EBSCO apart and how EBSCO is continuing to develop its employees through leadership training.
“The opportunity here is limitless. With so many different types of businesses all over the country and all over the world, if you have a good attitude, you like to learn, and you like to be challenged, this is a fantastic place to be. I have been so impressed with how nice everyone here has been.”
As part of their core principles, EBSCO is committed to investing in people and fostering continuous improvement.
Developing Great Leaders from Within
EBSCO recognizes the need to continue to improve leadership within the company and created a two-day course to help their employees grow as leaders.
Leading the EBSCO Way, EBSCO’s leadership training program for its employees, concentrates on four areas of focus (personal, people, thought, and results). Each of these areas includes 3 competencies underneath which apply differently with each level of leadership.
This course helps employees focus on targeted skills and requirements that are essential to be an effective leader at EBSCO.
“EBSCO values leaders at all levels, from the individual contributor to senior leadership. Through this program, employees are challenged to ask themselves, ‘What skills and competencies do I need to develop so that I’m ready to step into that leadership role?’”
EBSCO has trained over 250 employees so far and evaluates them 3 months after the course to see how they have implemented the training. They plan to further analyze the effect of the training with company-wide surveys in the future.
Beyond Leading the EBSCO Way, additional learning experiences and opportunities for leadership development are being established. This innovative company clearly cares about their employees, wants them to grow personally and professionally, and to continuously improve.
