Sidewalk Film Festival has been around for almost 20 years! Yesterday, they announced their opening and closing films.

The beginning…

“You will not see a more triumphant film all year” when you go to watch “Step,” the festival’s opening film. Showing August 25th, “Step” tells the real-life story of a high school step team (think Stomp!) from Baltimore trying to win a tournament and get a college scholarship. “Step” won an award for inspirational filmmaking at Sundance 2017, and the Audience Award for Best Feature at AFI Docs Festival.  After the movie, Sidewalk will host their Opening Night Party in front of the Alabama Theatre!

…and the end!

Sidewalk will end their 19th Festival with a comic book movie: “My Friend Dahmer,” the true story of Jeffry Dahmer’s high school years. Based on Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Award winner Derf Backderf’s multi-award-winning graphic novel by the same name, “My Friend Dahmer” features former Disney Channel star Ross Lynch in the leading role. “It’s a perfect example of stellar film that Birmingham deserves,” according to Rachel Morgan, Sidewalk’s creative director.
