Birmingham Audubon says, “Restoring native plant habitat is vital to preserving biodiversity. By creating a native plant garden, each patch of habitat becomes part of a collective effort to nurture and sustain the living landscape for birds and other animals.”
Birmingham Botanical Gardens’ Native Plant Propagation Group volunteers spend many hours all year long planning, propagating and nurturing a wide variety of mostly perennials and a few annual plants native to the southeastern United States. Some of these plants are only available at the Birmingham Botanical Gardens Spring Plant Sale, as they are not offered through local nurseries. Our goal as the Native Plant Propagation Group is to get as many native plants into The Gardens of as many people in the community as possible.
This spring at the Birmingham Botanical Gardens Spring Plant Sale, the Native Plant Group will be offering nearly 6,000 beautiful native plants. Whatever your garden’s special characteristics, there will be native plants that will be well suited for them. Whether you’re looking for plants that thrive in a shady, moist location or a sunny, dry spot, there will be natives to fit your situation. And if gardening with natives is new to you, there will be native plant experts available to answer your questions and advise you on conditions specific to your gardening environment.
This year, there will be stickers on the plant signs indicating drought tolerance as well as identifying plants that attract bee and butterfly visitation. GO NATIVE this year at the Birmingham Botanical Gardens Spring Plant Sale. It takes place on April 7 from 9-7 p.m., April 8 from 9-5 p.m. and April 9 from 1-3 p.m. at Brookwood Village. Admission to the public sale is free.
