What a celebration! Despite a few summer afternoon pop-up showers, 4th of July events in Birmingham went off without a hitch. Bham Now did its part visiting American Village, watching UAB’s Community Band and Thunder on the Mountain. We even got to catch a glimpse of Vulcan’s new light show.
Happy 242th Birthday America!! Bham Now has compiled our top 10 list of 4th of July celebrations in and around the Magic City. This year, with the 4th landing on a Wednesday, some communities are celebrating our nation’s founding a week in advance.

Everybody loves a birthday party, but how many opportunities do you have to celebrate Vulcan’s 114th birthday and then take a little Birmingham home with you?
Four of the Magic City’s most popular tourist destinations, Vulcan Park and Museum, McWane Science Center, Birmingham Zoo and Oak Mountain State Park are honoring active duty military personnel and veterans this Memorial Day weekend with free admission.
It’s the event of the year for family fun at Vulcan Park and Museum! Help Vulcan blow out his candles at his 114th Birthday Bash, along with “V” (Vulcan’s six-foot plush mascot), Birmingham City Mayor Randall Woodfin and City Council President Valerie A. Abbott as well as other city officials. Ice Cream from Piggly Wiggly and Bud’s Best Cookies will be handed out after V blows out his candles!
Birmingham, AL is one of 14 US cities to host the Navy. Last month we wrote about Navy Week, April 9-15. Check out the events, festivities and visit sites. Take in a Barons game, visit the McWane Center, stop by Vulcan Park and Museum and support our US sailors!
