Warlock, Davies, & Britten with the Alabama Symphony Orchestra

Join the Alabama Symphony for a concert featuring music of the British Isles.

The program opens with Peter Warlock’s Serenade for Strings. This short work features enchanting melodies inspired by Warlock’s love of English folk song and Elizabethan music.  Written as a gift for his long-time mentor, Frederick Delius, Warlock vividly captures the beauty and grandeur of the English countryside.

Next, ASO Concertmaster Daniel Szaz performs Peter Maxwell Davies’ A Spell for Greencorn: The MacDonald Dances. In this whimsical work, Davies imagines a Scottish fiddler traveling from farm to farm and encountering a delightful cast of characters (represented by various instruments in the orchestra) along the way.

Finally, ASO principal horn Valerie Sly is joined by tenor David Tayloe for Benjamin Britten’s Serenade for Tenor, Horn, and Strings. Using texts from great English poets William Blake, Alfred Tennyson, John Keats, and others, Britten’s singular work takes listeners on a journey from dusk to dawn with poignant songs all ruminating on the spectacular qualities of the night.
